Darwin Núñez Eyes Liverpool Return Amid Chelsea Interest

Darwin Núñez is reportedly keen on a sensational return to Liverpool just one year after leaving Anfield, despite attracting interest from Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window.
The Uruguayan striker departed Liverpool last summer to join Al-Hilal in a deal worth around €53 million (£46.3 million). However, his spell in Saudi Arabia has not gone as planned. Núñez was reportedly dropped from Al-Hilal’s Saudi Pro League squad in February following the club’s January signing of Karim Benzema.
Recent reports have also suggested that the 26-year-old has terminated his contract with the Saudi club, opening the door for a move away this summer.
According to reports from Spain, Núñez would welcome a return to Liverpool, where he spent three seasons after arriving from Benfica in 2022 for an initial £64 million fee.
Chelsea are said to be monitoring the striker’s situation, with the arrival of Xabi Alonso reportedly influencing the club’s transfer plans. Barcelona and Newcastle United have also been linked with a move for the forward.
During his time at Liverpool, Núñez scored 40 goals in 143 appearances. Despite helping the Reds secure the Premier League title in his final season, he started only eight league matches before his departure.
With several clubs showing interest and his future uncertain, Núñez could be one of the most talked-about names in this summer’s transfer market.
In his farewell message to Liverpool supporters following the confirmation of his Anfield departure, he said:
“Thank you, Liverpool. After three unforgettable years, the time has come for me to say goodbye. I leave with countless memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
My heart is full of gratitude for the incredible support you have shown me. Through every high and every low, you stood by me, believed in me, and never stopped backing me.
Liverpool will always hold a special place in my heart and will forever be a part of who I am. I will miss this club, the fans, and this city more than words can express.
To my teammates, the coaching staff, and everyone behind the scenes, thank you for everything. I wish you all nothing but success and happiness in the future.
Núñez’s spell at Anfield was far from straightforward, with the striker often criticised for missed opportunities in front of goal. Despite the challenges, Liverpool supporters continued to back him throughout his time at the club.
Speaking earlier this year, Núñez expressed his gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support during difficult moments.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss them. The truth is, they made me feel incredibly welcome, and the same goes for my family.
“During some very difficult periods in my life, the fans always showed me love and support. That meant a lot to me, and it’s one of the reasons I still miss Liverpool today.”
