Liverpool are among a growing list of clubs monitoring Chelsea right-back Malo Gusto, with the France international increasingly likely to leave Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes.
The 23-year-old has impressed in a Chelsea shirt, but the presence of Reece James and Marco Palestra gives the Blues genuine depth at right-back. That surplus has prompted internal discussions about sanctioning a departure, according to Simon Phillips.
Chelsea’s initial asking price of £75m remains a significant obstacle. Phillips reports the club may be prepared to lower their valuation as the deadline approaches, opening the door to a number of interested parties. Liverpool have emerged as one of the more unexpected admirers, while Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Juventus are also monitoring the situation.
Manchester City continue to hold an interest of their own. Gusto has been keen to leave Chelsea for the past four months and maintains a strong relationship with former Blues head coach Enzo Maresca, now in charge at the Etihad. City’s simultaneous pursuit of Enzo Fernández, however, could complicate any dual approach for Chelsea assets.
Why the Liverpool link makes sense
The Reds’ interest is intriguing precisely because it addresses a clear need. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure left a sizeable void, and Jeremie Frimpong has yet to fully settle at Anfield. Gusto, already proven in the Premier League, would offer a more battle-hardened alternative even if his style differs from Alexander-Arnold’s progressive, playmaking approach.
Chelsea will almost certainly prefer to sell abroad rather than strengthen direct rivals. With interest from multiple European clubs, they are unlikely to be short of options.
Whether Liverpool can turn admiration into a formal bid — and whether Chelsea are willing to compromise on price — will become clearer in the coming days.
