Chiesa’s training absence is medical, not a transfer signal

Liverpool fans could be forgiven for reading the worst into Federico Chiesa’s latest absence. They shouldn’t.
The Italian was missing from Wednesday’s session at the AXA Training Centre as Andoni Iraola’s squad prepared for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Newcastle.
Chiesa had played 45 minutes in the behind-closed-doors draw with Como earlier in the week but was not among the 25-man group pictured back at the training ground.
The reason is understood to be a physical issue requiring assessment by the club’s medical staff. There is currently no indication it is linked to a transfer.
That distinction matters. Recent reports have suggested Liverpool could entertain offers for the 28-year-old, and speculation has linked him with Valencia. None of that should be confused with Chiesa actively pushing for an exit.
In fact, the winger has been consistently positive about his future. “I am happy here at Liverpool. I love the club, I love the fans, I love everything,” he said this summer, describing Iraola’s arrival as “a new chapter.
Supporters remain split. Some see a player past his best; others argue his future should hinge on whether the new manager trusts him with meaningful minutes.
A third group points to his injury record and limited opportunities under Arne Slot and urge patience.
Chiesa is still trying to convince a new coach he deserves a bigger role. He scored against Sunderland in pre-season and has repeatedly spoken about wanting to make his mark at Anfield.
His latest absence looks like a medical matter, not a farewell.
The immediate question is simpler: can he recover in time to offer Iraola another attacking option against Newcastle?
