Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa face uncertain Anfield futures after Newcastle snub
James Pearce has suggested it would be “no surprise” if Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa left Liverpool before the summer transfer window closes.
The pair were notable absentees from Andoni Iraola’s first matchday squad as Liverpool manager. Neither made the starting XI nor the bench for Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle, a decision that has inevitably intensified speculation about their futures.
Reflecting on the game in The Athletic, Pearce wrote: “With Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott not even making the bench against Newcastle, it would be no surprise if they moved on in the remaining eight days of the window.”
Omission raises questions
Fabrizio Romano reported in recent days that Chiesa has been dealing with a minor physical issue and is not necessarily “on his way out.” Even so, the 28-year-old’s absence on Tyneside looked pointed.
Elliott and Chiesa — both part of Liverpool’s Premier League-winning squad two seasons ago — were overlooked in favour of Lewis Koumas, who came off the bench for his Premier League debut and only his second competitive appearance for the club. James McConnell and Trey Nyoni were also named among the unused substitutes.
The hierarchy is clear. Iraola is prepared to trust youth over two established attackers wearing the numbers 14 and 19.
Suitor interest likely to rise
Prospective buyers may now feel emboldened to test Liverpool’s resolve with offers for one or both players before next Tuesday’s deadline. Their exclusion from a competitive squad sends a strong signal about their current standing.
Liverpool’s squad depth is not overflowing, however. Both players have shown they can make a difference from the bench in the past, and neither would welcome being permanently typecast as a supersub. There is little incentive for the club to actively push them towards the exit.
Whether Elliott, Chiesa or both remain at Anfield beyond the window may become clearer in the coming days. For now, their omission at St James’ Park has left their futures open to question.
