Alexis Mac Allister’s future at Liverpool is growing more complicated. Despite remaining a key part of Andoni Iraola’s midfield, the club are already looking ahead to the summer of 2027 and another midfield reinforcement — a move that could further crowd the Argentine’s position.
The 27-year-old has made no secret of his disappointment at not being offered a new contract, especially after Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai both received extensions. Mac Allister is contracted until 2028, so there is no immediate urgency for Liverpool, but the lack of a new deal has inevitably fuelled speculation.
According to talkSPORT, Liverpool are considering Bournemouth’s Alex Scott among potential targets for next summer. With Gravenberch and Szoboszlai viewed as long-term pillars, any new arrival would increase competition for places and could push Mac Allister further down the pecking order.
On the pitch, however, the midfielder’s response has been emphatic. He scored the decisive goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Atlético Madrid — a powerful left-footed strike from outside the box in the 50th minute that completed the comeback in Iraola’s first match in the competition. The goal underlined both his technical quality and his importance in big moments.
Mac Allister brings composure under pressure, intelligent positioning and the ability to control games from deeper areas. Those attributes remain valuable in a squad that will need genuine depth across the Premier League and Champions League. Signing another midfielder does not automatically mean he has to leave.
The bigger issue is perception. If Mac Allister continues to feel undervalued while Liverpool invest heavily around him, frustration could eventually harden into a desire to move on. For now, though, he is doing exactly what the club would hope: answering the uncertainty with performances that make any decision about his future harder rather than easier.
Liverpool must balance long-term planning with recognition of what Mac Allister already provides. The coming months will show whether they can keep both sides of that equation in harmony.
