Ancelotti, who took charge in May 2025, has not ruled out recalling the 33-year-old when major tournaments arrive. For now, however, youth and long-term planning have taken priority.Alisson, a veteran of 83 caps and Brazil’s first-choice for the majority of his international career, was an ever-present at the 2026 World Cup. He started every game as the Seleção suffered a shock round-of-16 exit to Norway. Under Ancelotti he had remained the established No. 1 when fit.
That status has been paused.The new 26-man squad contains only a handful of survivors from the World Cup group: Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhães, Douglas Santos, Bruno Guimarães, Danilo Santos, Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Endrick and Rayan. Nine uncapped players were called up, and ten of the selected squad currently play their club football in Brazil. The goalkeeping department saw the most dramatic overhaul. Hugo Souza, Pedro Morisco and Otávio — who share just one senior cap between them — were preferred to Alisson, Ederson and Weverton.
Ancelotti explained the thinking behind the selections with characteristic directness. “We are motivated by the fact that we have time to prepare for a new cycle and get ready for the upcoming competitions,” he said.
“That doesn’t mean the others are excluded.“We know Alisson very well, and when the competitions — like the Copa America — come, if he remains being the best goalkeeper in Brazil, Alisson will play. Right now, however, we have to prioritise the younger ones.“I chose these players — Marquinhos, Gabriel [Magalhães], Bruno [Guimarães], Raphinha, and Vini Jr. — to help with this change in direction.
They are crucial for the future. We are confident in their commitment to quality, seriousness and professionalism, and they will help the younger players improve. That doesn’t mean other players won’t be involved.“One thing is certain: a player who is 34 or 35 years old isn’t the future; they are the present. If a player of that age is ready to play in a major tournament, they will be in the national squad.”The strategy is transparent. Ancelotti is building towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and, beyond that, the 2030 World Cup. He wants a core of players who will still be in their prime in four years’ time, while retaining the option to recall proven performers when the stakes are highest.For Liverpool the timing is fortuitous. Alisson has battled recurring muscle problems in recent seasons.
Instead of travelling and training with Brazil for friendlies against Australia and India at the end of September and start of October, he will enjoy a three-week rest. That recovery window arrives just before the Reds face Manchester City on Sunday 11 October — a fixture that could define the early trajectory of their Premier League campaign.Ancelotti’s decision is therefore a double-edged development. It is a temporary setback for a goalkeeper who has been a cornerstone of Brazil’s defence for years, yet it also hands Arne Slot’s side a practical advantage at a critical moment in the domestic calendar. Whether Alisson returns as Brazil’s undisputed No. 1 when competitive football resumes will depend on form, fitness and whether he remains the country’s outstanding option between the posts.
