Liverpool have reportedly restarted contract discussions with Alexis Mac Allister, according to transfer source Indy Kaila.
The Argentina international’s current deal at Anfield runs until June 2028. Earlier this year the club chose not to offer an extension, even as fellow midfielders Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai were rewarded with long-term renewals. That decision left Mac Allister openly disappointed.
Speaking before Liverpool’s Champions League opener against Atlético Madrid earlier this month, the 27-year-old was characteristically honest. “I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad,” he said. “Everyone can see that I give my 100 per cent for this football club every single day in training and games. Of course I can have very good games and bad games like everyone, but I always give my best.
“I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine. Of course there is still time. The fans don’t need to worry because I will give my 100 per cent until the last day I’m here. There were options to leave this summer but I think right now I’m in the right club and I have the right mindset.”
Mac Allister confirmed the message had been relayed through his agent rather than in a direct conversation with the club hierarchy. He also made clear he had no interest in forcing an exit, despite the disappointment.
A player still central to Liverpool’s plans
Mac Allister arrived from Brighton in the summer of 2023 for around £35 million and quickly established himself as a key part of the midfield that helped deliver Premier League success. Intelligent, technically sharp and capable of controlling games from deep or arriving in the box, he has been one of the more complete midfielders in the Premier League during his best periods at the club.
Last season was more mixed, and that inconsistency is understood to have influenced Liverpool’s initial reluctance to open formal talks on a new deal. The club’s hierarchy, under the previous sporting director, preferred to wait and assess. With two years still remaining on the existing contract, there was no immediate pressure to act.
That calculation appears to be changing. Mac Allister has responded to the uncertainty with a series of strong performances. He scored a spectacular late winner against Atlético Madrid in the Champions League and found the net against Tottenham in the League Cup. The combination of technical quality, tactical intelligence and relentless work rate that first made him so valuable has returned at an important moment.
External interest and internal pressure
Interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs has never fully gone away. Real Madrid and Manchester City have both been linked with the World Cup winner at various stages, and the lack of a new contract only increased the speculation over the summer. Mac Allister’s decision to stay and publicly reaffirm his commitment has been noted inside the club.
His father and agent, Carlos Mac Allister, recently stated that no formal approach had yet been made by Liverpool regarding a renewal, underlining that any progress remains at an early stage. The latest reports from Indy Kaila nevertheless suggest the door that was previously closed has at least been reopened.
Under new head coach Andoni Iraola, the midfield picture continues to evolve. Iraola has spoken positively about Mac Allister’s importance and indicated there is still time to address contractual situations. The Spaniard’s preference for intense, structured football plays to many of Mac Allister’s strengths, particularly his ability to press, retain possession under pressure and progress the ball.
Looking ahead
Mac Allister still has almost two full seasons left on his current terms, so neither side is under immediate pressure. A new deal would, however, remove uncertainty, reward a player who has delivered on big occasions, and send a clear signal that Liverpool value continuity in a key area of the pitch.
For the player himself, the situation remains straightforward. He has repeatedly said he loves the club and the city, and that his focus is on performing. Recent weeks have shown exactly what he can still produce when fully focused. Whether that is enough to turn reported talks into a concrete offer will become clearer in the coming months.
What is already clear is that Mac Allister is making it increasingly difficult for Liverpool to leave his long-term future unresolved.
