Liverpool could be facing a major decision over the future of one of the biggest names in the club’s recent history.
The Reds currently have no active contract negotiations with Alisson Becker, according to Fabrizio Romano, raising fresh questions over whether the legendary goalkeeper will remain at Anfield beyond the 2026/27 season.
At 34, Alisson remains one of the most respected goalkeepers in world football. Since arriving from Roma in 2018, the Brazilian has played a crucial role in Liverpool’s success, helping the club win the Premier League and Champions League while establishing himself as one of the finest all-round goalkeepers of his generation.
However, his long-term future is now far from certain.
🔴 Liverpool Yet to Discuss New Deal
Alisson’s current contract runs until the end of the 2026/27 campaign after Liverpool activated an option to keep him for an additional season.
But there is reportedly no further option available, meaning a completely new agreement would be required if the Reds want him to stay beyond next summer.
Romano addressed the situation on the Here We Go Podcast, explaining that negotiations over a new contract have not yet begun.
“At the moment, there are not active conversations between Alisson and Liverpool over a new deal,” Romano said, while suggesting there could be movement during the summer of 2027.
That revelation is likely to raise eyebrows among Liverpool supporters, particularly given Alisson’s importance to the team over the past eight years.
⚠️ Why Are Liverpool Hesitating?
The situation is reportedly linked to Liverpool’s desire to carefully assess their goalkeeping options before making a major commitment.
The club already has Giorgi Mamardashvili waiting in the wings, while highly-rated Belgian goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans is also expected to arrive from Genk ahead of the 2027/28 campaign.
Liverpool therefore have younger alternatives who could potentially become part of the club’s long-term plans.
Alisson’s age and recent injury problems are also believed to be factors the club must consider.
That does not, however, mean Liverpool have decided that the Brazilian is finished at Anfield.
Far from it.
🧤 Alisson Still Has a Lot to Offer
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his contract, Alisson continues to command enormous respect inside Liverpool.
His shot-stopping ability, composure under pressure, distribution and experience remain major assets.
Goalkeepers can also maintain a high level well into their thirties, meaning Liverpool will have to carefully weigh the benefits of keeping an experienced world-class goalkeeper against the opportunity to develop a younger long-term successor.
A strong season from Alisson could completely change the situation.
If he remains fit and continues producing performances at his best, Liverpool could eventually decide that keeping their No.1 remains the safest option.
👀 Juventus Previously Showed Interest
Alisson’s situation has already attracted attention elsewhere.
Juventus reportedly showed strong interest in the goalkeeper earlier this year, although Liverpool ultimately decided to activate the option in his contract and keep him for another season.
The Reds had already experienced significant changes among their senior players, making continuity particularly important.
But with another year now approaching, Liverpool appear prepared to take their time before deciding what comes next.
🚨 January Could Become Important
If no new contract is agreed, the situation could become even more interesting from January 2027.
Alisson would then be able to enter the final months of his Liverpool contract with his future increasingly uncertain, while foreign clubs could potentially begin positioning themselves for a free transfer.
Given his reputation and experience, it would be no surprise if several major clubs monitored developments closely.
A return to Serie A could even become a possibility, although there is currently no certainty about where Alisson would go if he eventually leaves Liverpool.
🔥 Liverpool Have a Huge Decision to Make
For now, there is no indication that Liverpool have decided to force Alisson out of the club.
Instead, the Reds appear to be keeping their options open and assessing the situation before committing to another long-term contract.
That makes the coming months extremely important.
If Alisson continues performing at an elite level, Liverpool could yet decide that experience is more valuable than making an immediate transition to a younger goalkeeper.
But if the club becomes convinced that Mamardashvili or another younger option is ready to take over, next summer could mark the beginning of a new era between the posts at Anfield.
One thing is clear: what once looked like an automatic extension can no longer be taken for granted.
Liverpool have a decision to make — and Alisson’s future could become one of the biggest talking points around Anfield as the 2026/27 season develops.
Could this really be Alisson Becker’s final season at Liverpool? 👀🔴
