Written by Eddie Being

Bolton Wanderers have agreed a deal to sign Liverpool youngster Luca Stephenson, according to sources cited by Football Insider.

The 22-year-old midfielder is expected to undergo his medical on Wednesday before completing a permanent move to the Championship club.

Bolton had been in advanced negotiations for Stephenson in recent weeks, and the Trotters have now moved ahead of several other clubs to secure his signature.

Stephenson impressed during Dundee United spell

Stephenson enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 campaign with Dundee United, making 29 appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

His performances attracted interest from Scottish giants Rangers and Celtic, but Bolton have now won the race for the versatile midfielder.

Stephenson is expected to join Bolton as they prepare for their return to the Championship for the 2026-27 season.

From Sunderland academy to Liverpool

Stephenson began his footballing journey in Sunderland’s academy before joining Liverpool in 2018.

He signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in 2020 and subsequently became a regular captain for the club’s Under-18 and Under-21 sides.

In 2023-24, he joined Barrow on loan, where he established himself as a regular at right-wing-back and helped the club finish eighth in League Two.

His performances earned him a move to Dundee United on loan for the following season.

At Dundee United, Stephenson helped the club finish fourth in the Scottish Premiership and secure European football. His performances were rewarded with both the Fans’ Young Player of the Year and Club Young Player of the Year awards.

His loan was subsequently extended for another season, where he continued to impress.

What can Bolton expect from Stephenson?

Stephenson’s numbers underline his growing influence.

According to FotMob, during the 2025-26 Scottish Premiership campaign he averaged 0.18 goals, 0.18 assists, 1.02 chances created and 5.52 defensive contributions per 90 minutes.

His ability to contribute both defensively and in attack could make him a valuable addition to Bolton’s squad.

At just 22, Stephenson also has plenty of room for further development. Bolton will be hoping he can reproduce his impressive form in the Championship and establish himself as an important player for the club.

With his medical reportedly scheduled, Stephenson appears to be closing in on the next major step in his career.
