Jamie Carragher has launched a furious criticism of VAR after Liverpool were denied a potential penalty during their Premier League clash against Arsenal.
The controversial moment involved Liverpool striker Alexander Isak, who appeared to have his shirt pulled by Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber while attempting to reach a cross delivered by Bradley Barcola.
Despite the apparent contact, referee Andy Madley allowed play to continue, while the VAR officials decided against recommending an on-field review. The decision quickly sparked debate among former players and football supporters.
Carragher Questions VAR Decision
Liverpool had already suffered an early setback after Kai Havertz took advantage of a defensive error to put Arsenal ahead inside the opening 20 minutes.
However, Andoni Iraola’s team responded with greater attacking intensity and began putting pressure on the visitors as they searched for an equaliser.
Speaking during Sky Sports’ half-time coverage, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher made his frustration clear, arguing that the officials should have awarded a penalty.
Carragher said:
“One of the best goalscorers in the league is pulled back seven yards out and it stops him heading the ball. Why does he need to make a meal of it? VAR, do your job!”
His comments reflected the growing frustration surrounding the decision, particularly because Isak appeared to be prevented from making a genuine attempt to reach the cross.
Daniel Sturridge and Ian Wright Also React
Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge also felt that Liverpool deserved a penalty for the incident.
Although Sturridge believed the contact was sufficient for a spot-kick, he suggested that Isak could have done more to attract the referee’s attention.
Gary Neville offered a slightly different perspective, questioning why the Liverpool forward had not reacted more strongly after apparently being pulled back during a promising goalscoring opportunity.
Meanwhile, former Arsenal striker Ian Wright admitted that his old club were fortunate to avoid conceding a penalty.
Wright’s position was that Isak should not have needed to exaggerate the contact before the officials recognised what had happened.
Iraola Left Frustrated as Liverpool Miss Penalty Opportunity
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola was also reportedly unhappy with the decision, believing his side had missed an important opportunity to get back into the contest.
The incident has once again raised questions about the consistency of VAR decisions in the Premier League, especially when shirt-pulling and off-the-ball challenges are involved.
For Liverpool supporters, the biggest frustration will be whether similar incidents are being judged consistently across different matches.
With Carragher, Sturridge and Wright all expressing concerns about the decision, the controversy is likely to remain a major talking point among football fans.
