Liverpool manager Arne Slot has finally lifted the lid on the true reason behind Caoimhin Kelleher’s departure from Anfield — and it wasn’t simply about game time.
Kelleher completed a move away from Liverpool earlier this week after more than a decade at the club, leaving many fans wondering why the long-serving goalkeeper chose to step away just as the team entered a crucial point in the season.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Slot addressed the speculation head-on, confirming that the decision was driven by “honest conversations” and a mutual understanding of the Irishman’s long-term ambitions.
> “Caoimhin wanted to take the next step in his career, and he made that very clear,” Slot said. “It wasn’t a matter of us pushing him out — it was about respecting a player who feels ready to be a No.1 every single week.”
While many assumed Kelleher’s exit was purely about securing consistent minutes, Slot explained there was more beneath the surface. He revealed that the goalkeeper had reached a point where staying in a backup role no longer aligned with his personal goals — especially after his standout performances last season when he covered for Alisson Becker.
> “After the run of games he had, he realised what he’s capable of,” Slot continued. “He showed he can be a first-choice keeper at the highest level. Once a player feels that strongly, you either hold them back or you let them grow.”
Slot also dismissed claims that Liverpool were reluctant to offer Kelleher a more competitive role, insisting the club fought to keep him but ultimately respected his wishes.
> “We would’ve been more than happy to keep him — he’s one of the best goalkeepers I’ve worked with,” Slot added. “But this club has always been about supporting players in making the right steps for their career.”
Kelleher departs Liverpool having made over 50 senior appearances, including memorable cup finals and several crucial Premier League and European nights.
His exit marks the beginning of a transitional period for Liverpool’s goalkeeping department, with plans already underway to bring in strong competition for Alisson ahead of the next campaign.
Fans may be disappointed to see him go, but Slot insists the decision was made with full transparency and respect.
> “There is no drama here,” Slot concluded. “Just a player ready for a new challenge — and a club proud of what he’s given us.”
