Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has sparked a heated debate among Reds fans after claiming that Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has been the best Premier League player over the past 18 months.
Carragher’s comments, made on Sky Sports, placed Palmer ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has been instrumental in the Reds’ success.
The claim caused a furious reaction from Liverpool fans, who took to social media to express their outrage.
Some fans accused Carragher of “hating” Salah, while others claimed that the former Anfield defender was “trying too hard” to provoke a reaction.
Carragher, however, was quick to defend himself, suggesting that his comments had been taken out of context.
“Maybe you try harder at putting the full quote out!” he said. “I said he’s been the best player over 18 months which he has in my eyes.
“And you probably know I said that but your desperation for likes & retweets knows no bounds!! Your account is so bad, please stop following me. He added via a reply:
“These people are the oracle now on the game! Couldn’t kick a ball down marsh lane but they KNOW the game better than anyone!”
The controversy surrounding Carragher’s comments has been fueled by the uncertainty surrounding Salah’s future at Liverpool.
The Egyptian international is poised to depart at the end of the season, having recently stated that he is “more out than in” at Anfield.
