Liverpool’s managerial situation has taken another surprising turn after a mysterious message regarding Steven Gerrard’s decision to reject Rangers began making waves online.
Richard Keys hinted on X that Gerrard “must have known” about a potential opportunity elsewhere when he declined the Rangers job, sparking speculation that the former midfielder may have been eyeing Liverpool amid the club’s recent struggles. Keys offered no further details, leaving fans to read between the lines.
Despite the rumours, new updates suggest the situation is far from straightforward. Transfer News Live claimed Gerrard won’t take any job in the UK until at least April, adding that he was close to returning to Rangers before pulling out at the last second. A key reason is a tax clause that would force him to repay 45% of his earnings if he moved back to the UK permanently before spring.
These complications show why linking Gerrard to Liverpool right now feels premature.
The Premier League champions face West Ham on Sunday, and Arne Slot has just reaffirmed that he still has strong support from the club’s hierarchy. He even noted that behind-the-scenes conversations have remained consistent for “the last year and a half.”
Gerrard did recently say that pressure on Slot is normal during a bad run — especially after the PSV defeat — and mentioned that “serious questions” arise when results dip. Those comments have resurfaced after Liverpool’s latest loss.
But the idea that Gerrard rejected Rangers just to position himself for the Liverpool job appears extremely unlikely. The gap between managing Rangers and taking charge of the Premier League champions is enormous, Slot has only just delivered a title, and Gerrard’s mixed spells at Aston Villa and Al Ettifaq make such a jump unrealistic.
Gerrard would love to manage Liverpool someday — but for now, the rumours seem far ahead of reality.
