The tragic news of Diogo Jota’s passing has profoundly shaken the football community. The 28-year-old Portuguese player was reported deceased following a car accident that also involved his 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva.

According to the Spanish publication Marca, Jota and his brother, who was associated with Liga Portugal 2 team Penafiel, lost their lives due to the deadly incident shortly after twelve-thirty on Thursday night. The vehicle was engulfed in flames.

Emergency services were promptly summoned to the location following multiple calls that notified them of the incident – and they subsequently verified that Jota, who previously played for La Liga team Atletico Madrid and FC Porto, along with his brother, had tragically lost their lives.

“A Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and the Primary Care Medical Staff (MAP) from the Mombuey Health Center were dispatched, who confirmed the fatalities of two individuals at the scene,” they stated in light of the reports regarding the deaths of Jota and his younger sibling.

The day before the forward’s untimely death, he shared a montage of his wedding day on Instagram, captioned: “A day we will never forget.” The touching footage of him and Rute Cardoso exchanging vows serves as a poignant reminder to cherish life.

Jota married his long-time girlfriend, Cardoso, in Porto two weeks ago, and they shared a photo together in front of the altar with their three children to commemorate their union. The caption stated: “June 22, 2025. Yes to forever.

“Following their walk down the aisle, Jota described himself as ‘the luckiest man in the world’ in an interview released on Wednesday, after the couple, who became engaged in July 2022.

Former club Porto, for whom he made 38 appearances, issued a statement expressing their grief. “FC Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and profound sorrow that we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who also trained with us in the youth ranks. Rest in peace,” they wrote.

Liverpool also released a statement expressing their devastation over Jota’s tragic death. The Reds, in an effort to ensure that his family receives the privacy they require, have indicated that they will not be making any further comments regarding the incident.

As reported by BBC Sport, the Guardia Civil informed them that Jota and his brother lost their lives around 00:30 local time on Thursday after their Lamborghini veered off the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle, subsequently catching fire.

Jota, who joined the red side of Merseyside in September 2020, quickly became a regular under Jurgen Klopp. Last season, under the management of Arne Slot, he participated in 37 matches across all competitions as they clinched the title.
