Liverpool continued their return to form with a 2-1 victory against the Premier League’s bottom side, Wolverhampton Wanderers. And one player’s performance was a critical factor in their search for three points.
After a measured start from both teams, Arne Slot’s men found the breakthrough. Jeremie Frimpong beat two defenders with a run down the right before cutting the ball back to Ryan Gravenberch, who slammed the ball into the bottom corner.
Florian Wirtz then doubled their advantage with a first league goal since arriving at Anfield, but Wolves threw a spanner in the works after the break, as Santiago Bueno steered home a rebound after Alisson had denied Tolu Arokodare. Nevertheless, Liverpool held on to secure a third victory in as many games, as they rose to fourth in the table.

After Liverpool signed Frimpong to replace the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold, there was hope that the Dutchman could provide the same degree of attacking threat to make up for the England international’s absence. But he’s not always been afforded opportunities this season, mainly because of injury issues.
The former Bayer Leverkusen right-back has had to steadily build fitness since then, but he was afforded an opportunity to start against the Premier League’s worst side. And he showed exactly what he could do in the build-up to the opening goal of the game, bursting into the box before having the awareness to cut the ball back to the unmarked Gravenberch.

It was an insight into what he can offer Slot going forward, but it was far from his only contribution in the tie. Over the course of 90 minutes, Frimpong managed to play two key passes, while he delivered multiple accurate crosses too.
On top of that, he was solid at the back when needed, winning all of his ground duels and not allowing anyone to dribble past him throughout the tie. It was an all-action performance from the 25-year-old, and if he can stay fit, then Slot has a real weapon on his hands.
