The latest edition of French publication L’Equipe ran with the headline an ‘English Heist’ after Liverpool produced the ultimate ‘smash and grab’ win over Paris Saint-Germain.
They may have recorded 27 shots and 10 shots on target at the Parc des Princes but PSG were unable to find a way past Alisson, despite their dominance on Wednesday night.
In total, the Brazilian goalkeeper made nine saves against Luis Enrique’s side, his joint-most in a Champions League game and the most on record by a Liverpool goalkeeper in the competition.
“It was probably the performance of my life,” he told TNT Sports. “The manager was telling us how hard it would be to play against PSG, how good they are with the ball and that we would have to be ready to suffer.”
As well as running with the previously mentioned headline, L’Equipe recognised Alisson’s efforts with a rare 9/10 rating, while teammate Mohamed Salah was handed 3/10 for his quiet display in Paris.
In regards to reaction from those in the French media, a report from Le Parisien described Liverpool’s performance as “very ugly” as they compared the result to their defeat to Atletico Madrid in November.
“It was almost all there,” they said. “Summer in March, victory born of a clear superiority, a great opponent who was ultimately very ugly. Everything was there, but everything, almost. Like a vision of happiness that appears but does not grasp.
“Everything remained in the state of almost, with the cruelty of conceding a goal on the counter three minutes from the end, in a scenario that recalls the defeat against Atlético de Madrid (1-2) on November 6 here.”
Foot Mercato, meanwhile, delivered a telling statement about PSG’s dominance.
“A clearly frustrating match for the Parisians who had played the perfect match, or almost,” they wrote. “On paper, it was difficult to do better as PSG crushed one of the best teams in Europe. But this defeat at the end of the match has a bitter taste.”
RMC Sport went on to mention Jamie Carragher’s comments on CBS Sports. “Luis Enrique’s men put Liverpool to the torture like no one else this season,” they began.
“Even the very protectionist England of football recognised this clear Parisian superiority. Jamie Carragher, former legend of the Reds, described this victory as ‘one of the greatest robberies in the history of football’.”
