In a recent critique, former Premier League striker Chris Sutton expressed concerns over Virgil van Dijk’s current form, suggesting the Liverpool defender is not performing at his previous high standards.

Sutton remarked, “I don’t think so. I think he was without doubt, when he went to Liverpool, the best defender in the Premier League up until the Pickford moment. Since then he hasn’t quite been the same.”
Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool in January 2018 for a then-record fee for a defender, quickly established himself as a cornerstone of the team’s defense. His leadership and defensive prowess were instrumental in Liverpool securing both the Champions League and Premier League titles in consecutive seasons. However, a significant knee injury in October 2020, resulting from a challenge by Everton’s Jordan Pickford, sidelined him for an extended period. Since his return, debates have arisen regarding his ability to regain his pre-injury form.
Sutton’s comments reflect a broader discussion among fans and analysts about Van Dijk’s recent performances. While some believe he remains a top-tier defender, others feel his impact has diminished post-injury. Sutton added, “Is he still a good defender? I think he is, but you’d put him in a category alongside other good Premier League defenders. I think he’s still good, but he’s certainly not the best defender in the Premier League.”
This critique underscores the high expectations placed on Van Dijk, given his previous accolades and influence on the pitch. As Liverpool continues its campaign, the team’s defensive solidity, with Van Dijk at its heart, will be crucial in determining their success in domestic and European competitions.
