Liverpool fans slammed for what they did as Newcastle United players received their medals for winning the Carabao Cup

Liverpool fans have been criticised for what they did at Wembley before Newcastle players collected their Carabao Cup winners’ medals.

Newcastle won the final 2-1 through goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak either side of half-time.

Federico Chiesa scored what proved to be a consolation goal in second half injury time for Liverpool, with his strike not enough to prevent the Magpies from lifting their first trophy since the 1969 Fairs Cup.

There were understandably emotional scenes amongst the Magpies faithful at full-time – particularly as they watched their team fall narrowly short to Manchester United in the 2023 Carabao Cup final.

Eddie Howe’s side lost 2-0 on that occasion, but there was not to be a repeat of that on Sunday at Wembley.

Team captain Bruno Guimaraes led his side up the Wembley steps to collect their winners’ medals – but some fans slammed the Liverpool section for what a majority of their fans had already done before that moment.

It was noted that a significant number of Reds fans were leaving the ground when their own players were collecting their runners-up medals, meaning they missed Newcastle’s presentation entirely.

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: “Liverpool fans not even bothering to watch the players get their runners up medals. Sore losers.”

A second said: “Disappointing to see Liverpool fans leaving Wembley Stadium before the team was presented with the runners up medals.”

A third added: “Embarrassing from all of us that. Take the L and enjoy the fact a club like Newcastle did everything to beat us.”

But Liverpool fans defended their actions after the game, with one writing: “The right thing to do. Let the team know that they are embarrassing.”

A second added: “About as much as that performance deserves.”

And a third stated: “Rightly so after that performance.”
