Liverpool’s January signing, Jeremy Jacquet, may have played his final game for Stade Rennais after sustaining a serious shoulder injury in their Ligue 1 match against RC Lens on Saturday. Reports from L’Équipe indicate the 20-year-old defender will likely need surgery, which could end his season in France and delay his arrival at Anfield.

The injury happened in the 69th minute of Rennes’ 3-1 loss to Lens, when Jacquet landed awkwardly following a challenge. He was visibly in pain, and Rennes head coach Habib Beye later confirmed the injury’s severity, calling it “serious.
” While there were initial hopes that rest could suffice, surgery now appears to be the best option for a full recovery.
If operated on, Jacquet will miss several months, effectively finishing his season with Rennes—a tough blow for the young Frenchman, who had hoped to end his time at the club on a high before officially joining Liverpool on July 1.
Liverpool, who signed Jacquet for £60 million on the winter transfer deadline, will stay in close contact with Rennes’ medical team.
The injury does not affect the transfer but adds complications for Arne Slot’s defensive plans. The Reds have already had to cope with long-term absences of Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley this season.
Liverpool officials plan to prioritise Jacquet’s long-term recovery over a rushed return, aiming to have him fully fit for the start of the 2026/27 pre-season in July.
With Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain and Virgil van Dijk turning 35, Jacquet remains an essential part of Liverpool’s defensive future, despite this temporary setback.
