The fall-out from Liverpool’s dramatic 2-2 draw against rivals Everton has continued, with Reds boss Arne Slot breaking his silence on his red card.
Slot was sent off by Michael Oliver after exchanging words with the official post-match, while his assistant Sipke Hushoff, Liverpool star Curtis Jones and Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure were also shown red cards after the final whistle.
The result, though, leaves Liverpool seven points clear of rivals Arsenal at the top of the Premier League ahead of their upcoming clash with Wolves on Sunday. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at the latest news from around Anfield…
Slot addresses red card
Slot has admitted he regrets his actions after being sent off following the derby, but the Dutchman also criticised the amount of added time Oliver allowed to be played.
“There’s process now. I think I have to respect it. So I can’t go into details. I think what happened was that the extra-time five minutes ended up being eight,” Slot said. “It happened a lot and the emotions got the better of me.
“If I could do it differently, If I look back at it, I would love to do it differently. I would do it (differently) next time as well. What has exactly been said or what has happened, there is an ongoing process and I don’t want to disturb that.”
Fresh injury blow
Slot has also confirmed that Cody Gakpo is a doubt for Sunday’s clash with Wolves after the forward picked up a knock against Everton.
Liverpool will also be without the injured Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton, while Curtis Jones is suspended following his red card. “The new manager (Vitor Pereira) has come in and done a good job. It will be a challenge on Sunday but that’s normal,” Slot said.
“You can’t expect to go and have an easy win. Trent we saw being able to play, it was the intention to play half an hour. He will be training with us again. Joe Gomez is out and Tyler Morton is out. Cody is a bit of a doubt as well, let’s wait to see how he is today, I had to take him off because of an injury, he got a knock.”
Moyes defends Slot
Everton boss David Moyes, meanwhile, has admitted he “feels a bit” for Slot over his sending off.
“I feel a bit for Arne Slot too because it is the sort of thing I was always getting involved in when I was a younger manager,” Moyes said. “It tells me that he cares a lot about his club and is fighting for his players.
“We are smiling. We were smiling with a minute to go in the game. We took a point from the game but not three. But we are also realistic that we got something from a game that was difficult to get anything at all. That made it a little bit more special and it has given us a good feeling.”
