Liverpool have significantly reduced their wage bill by over £20 million this summer following the departure of several key players.
Among the high-profile exits were senior stars Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara, whose contracts expired on June 30th, and goalkeeper Adrian, who turned down a new deal to return to his boyhood club, Real Betis.
Thiago Alcantara, once the third-highest earner at Liverpool with a £200,000-a-week contract, decided to retire after a challenging period at Anfield plagued by injuries.Joel Matip, who was earning around £100,000 per week, ended his eight-year stint with the club but has yet to find a new team.
Meanwhile, Fabio Carvalho completed a permanent move to Brentford on August 12th in a deal worth £27.5 million, including add-ons.Carvalho, who spent the previous season on loan at RB Leipzig and Hull City, had been earning approximately £40,000 per week at Liverpool.
Adrian, who made 26 appearances for the Reds since joining from West Ham in 2019, was on a £60,000-a-week deal before opting to leave Merseyside.
These departures have collectively reduced Liverpool’s wage bill by approximately £20.8 million, allowing the club to free up financial resources ahead of future transfer windows.Despite these savings, Liverpool has had a relatively quiet summer in terms of new signings, focusing instead on trimming their squad and managing their finances efficiently.
As Liverpool looks ahead, they are expected to re-enter the transfer market in January, particularly for an A-list midfielder, after a potential deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi fell through when the player opted to remain with his current club.
