Ibrahima Konaté scored one of the most moving goals of the Premier League season as he completed the scoring in Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle, marking an emotional return to action following the passing of his father last week.

The defender had been absent for Liverpool’s previous three matches while spending time with his family during an incredibly difficult period. He returned on Saturday night and delivered a performance that made everyone associated with the club immensely proud.
With Arne Slot’s side already leading 3-1 deep into second-half stoppage time, the Frenchman was on hand to finish off a goalmouth scramble from a set piece. Upon scoring, Konaté sprinted towards the corner between the Kop and the Kenny Dalglish Stand to celebrate.
Liverpool teammates surround Konaté in touching scenes
As Konaté acknowledged the Anfield crowd’s applause, every Liverpool player on the pitch rushed over to embrace the 26-year-old. Overcome with emotion, the centre-back was seen wiping away tears, while captain Virgil van Dijk shared a heartfelt, supportive hug with his teammate.
A towering display capped by a deserved goal
It has been an emotional period for everyone at Liverpool following the tragic death of Diogo Jota last summer, and even more so for Konaté after the recent loss of his father. His swift return to action is a remarkable reflection of his character, made all the more impressive by the level of performance he produced under such circumstances.
Even before his late goal, Konaté had been outstanding defensively. Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle praised his “excellent showing” in the post-match ratings, and the statistics backed it up. According to Sofascore, Konaté made 10 clearances, completed 34 of his 39 passes (an 87% success rate), won three of his five duels and recorded two tackles.
His stoppage-time strike was a fitting reward for a superb all-round display and a powerful moment after personal tragedy — one made even more poignant by the outpouring of support from his teammates immediately after the goal
