Mohamed Salah has quietly been having a really good pre-season for Liverpool.
The Egyptian has been one of the few regular starters to have reported for training from the early days of the summer.Between then and now, he has been his absolute usual self, and better.
Arne Slot raved about Salah after meeting the 32-year-old for the first time.Meanwhile, new assistant coach John Heitinga has been impressed by Salah in training, while former Liverpool player Gary McAllister has, too.Once the games have started, Salah has continued his exceptional standards.
An assist in the game against Real Betis was followed by a trademark strike against Arsenal. And after his goal, the Liverpool legend was in a chatty mood.Journalists shares Mo Salah chatThe good news for Liverpool fans is that Salah is looking just as good as ever heading into the new campaign.
The bad stuff is that it still looks likely that it will be Salah’s last at the club.Nevertheless, if 2024/25 is to be Mo’s swansong at Anfield, then we’re going to enjoy him to the absolute fullest possible. And according to journalist James Pearce, Salah looks like he’s doing the same.
Speaking on The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, Pearce says he managed a rare interaction with the forward following the win over Arsenal.“He [Salah] absolutely smashed all the pre-season testing that they did at the AXA before they came over here and he just looks really happy, that’s the other thing,” says the journalist.
He famously never speaks to the English media and I said to him last night because he scored, he looked great, I thought I’ve got to chance my arm, I’m used to rejection.
So, I said, ‘Mo, any chance of two minutes?’“And he actually said ‘I’ll speak after the next game.’ So I was like ‘brilliant! We’ll speak to you on Saturday then,’ and he was like ‘yes, yes speak to you on Saturday hahaha.
I’m not sure that it was completely genuine but I’m clinging to the hope that we might get a few words out of him.”What will Mo Salah come out and say?It sounds likely that this was simply Salah being his at times cheeky self with the media.
As Pearce says, he seems to have made a point of not speaking in the mixed zone after games. However, this being the summer time and the transfer window being open, a player promising to speak to the press can be taken in different ways.
The Saudi Arabian clubs are still interested in Salah and there remains a small possibility that he could leave if a big bid comes in.If Mo were to get on the microphone and announce that his Liverpool career is over after Sunday’s game against Man United, though, it would be an enormous surprise.
Another option is that Salah declares that he’s signing a new contract to stay at Liverpool long-term. That would be fantastic. Or, he could, you know, just give a few words on the game. Let’s wait and see Mo keeps his promise.
