Liverpool news

Luis Enrique has made his stance on Liverpool clear after being identified as their top managerial target.

Luis Enrique’s stance on Liverpool has become clearer amid reports linking him as the leading candidate to replace Arne Slot if the Dutchman is dismissed.

Liverpool’s situation has worsened dramatically — they’ve now lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions following Tuesday’s heavy 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV.

The Reds have slipped out of the Premier League’s top half and now sit below local rivals Everton, who beat Manchester United 1-0 on Monday.

The next eight days are expected to be crucial for Slot, with tough away fixtures at West Ham and Leeds, followed by a home match against Sunderland on December 2.

Club legend Jamie Carragher believes Slot has three matches to save his job, writing in The Telegraph that anything less than seven points would leave his position “untenable”.

Liverpool rarely sack managers mid-season — only Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers were dismissed early in the past century.

But if Slot becomes the next on that list, The Sun claims Liverpool would first ask Jurgen Klopp to return as interim manager until the end of the season.

However, the long-term plan reportedly points to PSG boss Luis Enrique, who led the French side to their first-ever Champions League trophy last season.

The Spaniard has always expressed interest in working in England, telling FourFourTwo back in 2013:

“I’d like to manage in England someday… It depends on the team and how they play.”

In that same interview, Enrique said he admired how Brendan Rodgers set up Liverpool during his first season:

“I like the way Rodgers gets the team playing together, even though it has been tough in his first year at Liverpool.”

More relevant now are remarks Enrique made in March 2025 regarding Liverpool.

PSG faced Liverpool in last season’s Champions League round of 16 and advanced on penalties.

They won 2-1 at Anfield to level the aggregate score at 2-2, and before that match Enrique said:

“Liverpool have been one of Europe’s top teams in recent years.

We’re facing the best-performing side in this season’s Champions League. They recently won the trophy.

After the Klopp era, it could’ve been difficult for Arne Slot, but he’s built a team that presses, defends, and attacks perfectly.

They can create controlled build-up play and hit on the counter. They’re a complete team.”
