Alexander Isak has reportedly told Newcastle United he wants to assess his options this summer, putting Europe’s top clubs on alert — but signing him won’t come cheap.
The Swedish striker, regarded as one of the Premier League’s most exciting forwards, has been linked with a switch to Liverpool throughout the transfer window. However, Newcastle initially rejected interest from Anfield, prompting the Reds to pivot and land Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth up to £79 million.
Despite Ekitike’s arrival, Isak is now believed to have officially requested that Newcastle explore possible exits, and he has notably been excluded from the club’s ongoing pre-season tour in Asia — a move that has only intensified speculation.
Liverpool Could Break the Bank Again
Liverpool have already spent over £250 million this window, bringing in Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez as Arne Slot reshapes the squad. If the Reds decide to return for Isak, their total summer outlay could soar past £400 million.
Reports suggest that Newcastle would only consider offers starting at £150 million for their 25-year-old talisman — a fee that would place him behind only Neymar and Mbappe in football’s all-time most expensive transfers. Agent commissions and wages — possibly as high as £300,000 per week — could add millions more to the deal, pushing the overall cost even higher.
Isak’s Future Uncertain
While Isak is open to a move, options may be limited. Manchester United are said to be out of the race, Manchester City already have Erling Haaland and signed Omar Marmoush, and Arsenal are prioritizing a deal for Victor Gyokeres. Chelsea, meanwhile, have strengthened with Liam Delap and Joao Pedro.
Liverpool may still be in the running — especially if Luis Diaz departs for Bayern Munich, freeing up space in both the squad and the wage bill. The Reds could still try to strike if they believe Isak is the final piece in their attacking puzzle alongside Mo Salah and Ekitike.
But with a price tag that high… this saga is far from over.
