Roy Keane has given his verdict on the new Premier League season and he is not backing Liverpool to enjoy instant success under new manager Arne Slot.
Jurgen Klopp’s exit as Liverpool manager left a big hole at Anfield, with Keane suggesting the new manager will struggle to guide his team into the top four in the Premier League campaign that gets underway this weekend.
Speaking on the Stick To Football with Sky Bet podcast, former Manchester United and Ireland captain Keane claimed Liverpool may be in for a season of transition under their new boss, as he admitted he is ‘not convinced’ they will thrive under Slot.
When asked whether he expects Liverpool to miss out on a top four finish in the Premier League he said: “Yes I think so, unless they get a couple of signings in the next few weeks.
I’m not convinced by them.”Keane also expressed some concerns about Manchester United’s midfield, as he fears some of the problems that were exposed with his old club last season could resurface.
It’s always a worry for me about competing and I still worry about the spine of that Manchester United team,” said Keane.“For all the nice play they have and good players, I still worry about the goalkeeper and striker.
On paper, they have a decent squad, but the reality is when they’ve played games, and last year with their record in the league they were so open.“If you’re on about competing, I just worry about the spine of the team. I have bigger worries than the midfield. I still worry about the goalkeeper (Andre Onana) as well.
I think they will get in the top four if they avoid injuries, but the concerns are still there.“I fully expect Man United to be a lot better than last season. They can’t be eighth again, they can’t be that bad.
We are talking about them (finishing) fourth here.”Keane also gave a hint that his days as a controversial pundit may not last for much longer, as he hinted he was tiring of the grind of getting to games in his role with Sky Sports.
I don’t think I’ll be doing punditry in 10 years’ time,” he added.“I love football but the hassle of matches, getting to games and the hassle of fans – I was in court a few months ago with somebody headbutting me – do you think I enjoy that side of it? Absolutely not.
The games are fine. Getting to the games, parking up, people shouting your name – good stuff, bad stuff – it’s a nuisance. Being a pundit in 10 years, no chance.
