Slot provides update on Chiesa and Gakpo absences ahead of Inter clash

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has offered a detailed update on the fitness of Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo as the Reds prepare for their crucial Champions League showdown against Inter Milan

The Premier League side travelled to Italy on Monday with a 19-man squad, notably without two of their key attacking options. Their absence immediately sparked questions, and Slot addressed the situation during his pre-match press conference.

Speaking to the media, the Liverpool manager confirmed that Chiesa was ruled out of the initial travelling squad due to illness.
“Federico is ill, so that is poor timing you could say,” Slot admitted. “But it’s not something you can do anything about.”

Slot revealed that the club’s medical department has been keeping a close eye on the Italian winger’s condition, though hopes of a dramatic turnaround remain slim.
“We are monitoring his situation. If he has an amazing recovery – which I, we, doctors don’t expect – he might travel tomorrow. But let’s have a fair expectation, that’s not what I expect,” he continued.

Chiesa’s potential absence comes as a blow for Liverpool, especially as the winger had been enjoying a strong run of form heading into the knockout stages of the competition.

Slot also shared disappointing news regarding Cody Gakpo, confirming that the Dutch forward sustained an injury during the Reds’ Premier League match against Leeds United.
“Cody Gakpo unfortunately picked up an injury in the last game we played against Leeds, and he will be out for a few weeks,” Slot revealed.

Gakpo’s setback leaves Liverpool with reduced depth in the attacking department as they face a resurgent Inter Milan side. With two influential forwards sidelined, Slot may be forced to adjust his tactical approach for one of the most important matches of the season.

Despite the challenges, the Liverpool manager expressed confidence in the available squad and urged his side to remain focused. The Reds will hope to secure a positive result in Italy before returning to Anfield for the second leg.
