Former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard has sent a message to Trent Alexander-Arnold after the latter replicated his iconic Old Trafford celebration.
The Reds’ defender believed he had scored within the first six minutes and ran off towards the camera, kissing the lens in a nod to memorable moments from past encounters with Manchester United.
However, VAR disallowed the goal after it was determined that Mohamed Salah had interfered with play by being offside during the build-up to Luis Diaz’s assist.
Despite this setback, Arne Slot’s team still managed to secure a resounding 3-0 victory over the Red Devils. Diaz was instrumental in the win, scoring two goals in the first half.
He headed in at the back post before adding to his tally with an impressive first-time shot. Salah kept up his good form in the match, capitalizing on another United error after the break.
As was the case in the Brentford game, Alexander-Arnold was substituted in the later stages of the match.
Unlike the 2-0 victory over the Bees, his response was more subdued this time around.
At the final whistle, he was seen thanking the traveling Liverpool fans, blowing three kisses to them and reminding them of the three-goal margin.
Despite the intervention of the video assistant referee, he remained in high spirits, sending a kiss emoji to his 11.6 million followers.
Gerrard reciprocated with the same emoji. As the camera followed him post-match, the 25-year-old was all smiles and had a parting message for the cameraman: “Next time, we’re coming back (sic).”The Dutch head coach saw his team extend their winning streak on Sunday, placing them second in the Premier League table.
They are one of two teams with a perfect record but are the only team yet to concede in their first three top-flight matches.
Slot said: “All of them [games so far] mean a lot. The first one was my first as Liverpool manager and the second was my first home game. This was my first big win. They showed me in the last weeks that they can work so hard.
We were so dominant with the ball and play a midfield of three.“There’s still a lot to prove because the Champions League is coming up. Two years ago was when we played Champions League at Liverpool and it wasn’t our best season.”
