Liverpool have burst into life in the transfer market just days before the deadline. The Reds have been slow movers this summer, failing to make a single new addition through June or July.
But as August prepares to come to a close as well, Liverpool have made their move. Giorgi Mamardashvili was the first to arrive, joining on Tuesday before being loaned back to Valencia.
Then, on Wednesday, the big news arrived. Liverpool have agreed to sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus. It is not an expensive signing from the Reds, but it is an exciting one.
And after Chiesa was spotted preparing to fly to Liverpool, attention turns to his arrival at the AXA Training Centre. What number does Federico Chiesa currently wear? It is always exciting when Liverpool prepare to announce a new signing. After being starved of that joy all summer long, Reds supporters are rightly having their moment.
The plane trackers are out and the excitement levels are reaching delirium. Only the transfer market can have this effect.Obviously, the most important thing is how much help Chiesa can be to Liverpool on the pitch.
The 26-year-old has a fair bit to prove in many respects and it will be interesting to see how he beds in. But before the serious stuff starts, Chiesa will go through all the fun of a welcome to his new club. A big part of that is seeing what shirt number the Italian will go for. Unlike in the last couple of summers, the big numbers at Liverpool are largely taken.
Chiesa has been wearing No.7 at Juventus for the past couple of seasons, but that currently belongs to Luis Diaz. There’s no way the Colombian is giving it up and nor should he.For his country, Chiesa has always had No.14 on his back over the past three years.
Having been vacant since Jordan Henderson’s exit in 2023, that could certainly be one to watch. What other options does Chiesa have? While we’d wager that 14 looks the most likely, it isn’t the only number that Chiesa has worn previously.
The winger sported No.25 when he first broke through as a young player at Fiorentina and that is also currently empty in the Liverpool squad.Nobody has actually worn 25 for the Reds since another European Championship winner – Pepe Reina – left in 2012. The final option for Chiesa is perhaps the most unlikely.
But the Italian wore No.22 upon initially joining Juventus in 2020.Calvin Ramsay wears that shirt for Liverpool, but is out on-loan for the season. If Chiesa wanted it, it seems at least possible that Calvin would give it up. All good options, let’s wait and see!
