This Liverpool departure went largely unnoticed as the transfer window came to an end.

Liverpool have wrapped up another late transfer-window deal, with academy forward Tyler Martin completing a permanent move to Stoke City.

Stoke confirmed on their official website that the 18-year-old has signed an 18-month contract to join their under-21s, after impressing during a trial spell. The switch came together quickly, ending Martin’s five-year stay at Liverpool.

Stoke’s statement highlighted why they acted fast, noting that Martin scored twice in three Premier League 2 appearances during the trial. Academy director Sam Stockley also pointed to the forward’s attitude as a major factor behind the decision.

Stockley praised Martin’s work ethic and professionalism, and described him as a modern attacking prospect — quick, direct, versatile across central and wide roles, and with a strong instinct for goal.

From Liverpool’s perspective, the move is another reminder that not every academy talent can be retained, especially as first-team priorities tighten pathways for younger players. Martin has had limited competitive minutes this season, while Stoke offered immediate opportunity and a clearer development route.

His return during the trial — two goals in 126 minutes off the bench — proved enough to turn a short-term chance into a permanent contract.

The transfer also continues a trend in Liverpool’s academy movement this window, with Calum Scanlon leaving on loan while Martin departs permanently, showing how different players can take different routes depending on timing and opportunities.

Martin will also be following a familiar path, with Francis Gyimah recently making the same Liverpool-to-Stoke switch — something that could help him settle quickly.

And while bigger stories have dominated Liverpool’s month, including criticism from Christophe Dugarry over the Jeremy Jacquet fee, deals like Martin’s still represent important long-term business for the club
