Trey Nyoni looks set to get his next chance in Liverpool’s first team on Wednesday – and he’s already left his mark on some of the club’s biggest stars.
The 17-year-old is expected to be in Arne Slot’s squad as the Reds begin their defense of the Carabao Cup against West Ham at Anfield. The Liverpool boss hinted Nyoni would be involved during his press conference on Tuesday as he looks set to ring the changes.
The midfielder’s inclusion in the senior squad now looks to be all but confirmed after he was left out of the U21s’ squad for last night’s EFL Trophy clash against Harrogate. The teenager is now surely set to be given his latest chance to impress Slot.
Nyoni has certainly been doing a lot of that over the past few months. Having made his senior debut under Jurgen Klopp last season, he has only increased his reputation at the club with an impressive pre-season.
Nyoni caught the eye with a number of impressive performances during the Reds’ pre-season tour of the USA, and even managed to grab a goal against Sevilla at Anfield. It’s no wonder then that Virgil van Dijk has already tipped the former Leicester youngster for big things.
The Liverpool captain was left suitably impressed by Nyoni when he was called up to train with Klopp’s senior squad last season. Youth coach Jay Spearing lifted the lid on what Van Dijk had told him after their first encounter in November 2023.“Virgil came up to him and congratulated him on training with them,” Spearing revealed.
He said, ‘He’s [Nyoni] got a lot more to come’ and he really liked him. Virgil also came out to watch the U-18s against Middlesbrough to see how Trey was playing.”And Van Dijk isn’t the only senior player Nyoni has left a big impression on.
Dominik Szoboszlai was left stunned by the youngster’s ability during Liverpool’s opening pre-season game against Real Betis during the summer.“I like [Nyoni] a lot,” Szoboszlai said after the game. “He is a really offensive player.
I just said on the bench to [Jarell] Quansah, you can’t even foul him because of his movements and stuff like this.”Nyoni will be hoping to make another big impression this evening on perhaps his biggest stage yet with Liverpool. He of course still has plenty of time ahead of him to develop as a player, but the early signs are certainly promising for the Reds.
