Liverpool enjoyed a terrific night of Champions League football on Tuesday as they beat AC Milan 3-1.
The Reds had missed being in Europe’s premier competition having finished a disappointing fifth in 2022/23.That was the first time Jurgen Klopp had failed to steer Liverpool into the Champions League during a full season in charge at Anfield.
And, unfortunately, Klopp’s final tie of what was an excellent record in the tournament will remain the slightly embarrassing 6-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in 2023.
Nevertheless, a new era is underway and Arne Slot has Liverpool looking good to continue the club’s excellent history in the Champions League.
And as they celebrated a fantastic and composed win over Milan at San Siro, it turns out they weren’t the only ones delighted with the victory.Inter fans sing for LiverpoolAs the new format of the Champions League continues to run, there was a nice symmetry to the games on Wednesday.
While Liverpool of course travelled to Milan on Tuesday, the Rossoneri’s eternal rivals Inter were in England to face Man City a day later.Inter were keen to avenge their final loss to City in 2023 and gave a good account of themselves, securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw at the Etihad.
It marked the beginning of a tough few days for the Serie A champions, as they lock horns with Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on Sunday. It’s obviously just as enormous a game as ever, with Inter currently three points and seven positions ahead of their city rivals. Hatred and animosity abounds.
And if there’s one thing Inter fans love to see perhaps even more than their own team winning, it’s the red and black of Milan losing. As a result, perhaps it should not have been a surprise to see footage emerge of Inter supporters chanting for Liverpool while aboard a flight to Manchester from Milan.
As per TNT Sports on X, while Inter fans were heading to England, Reds supporters were flying back after seeing their team win at San Siro. As the fans mingled, a chant appears to have broken out.
Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool!” sing the fans, some of them in Inter shirts. “Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool! Liverpool!”What is Liverpool’s record against the Milan sides? Despite the heavyweight status of the two Milan sides, Liverpool have a surprisingly good record against both.Shockingly, Tuesday’s win was only the fifth time the Reds have faced the Rossoneri.
Two of those meetings have been finals, with the clubs winning one apiece.Since then, Liverpool have now won all three of the subsequent meetings, which have each come in the Champions League group stage.
The Reds have faced the Nerazzurri once more, with six meetings. The first of those was in the 1965 European Cup semi-final, with Liverpool winning the first-leg 3-1 at Anfield before going down 3-0 and heading out at San Siro.
They then had to wait 43 years for another meeting, Liverpool winning both legs of a last-16 game in 2008. 14 more years passed before another round of 16 tie saw both teams claim a victory but Liverpool progress on aggregate.
