Wolves star Matheus Cunha makes Liverpool feelings clear after narrow Anfield defeat

Written by admin

Wolves star Matheus Cunha hailed Arne Slot’s “unbelievable” Liverpool after Sunday’s defeat at Anfield but suggested his team’s display still offered plenty of positives.

League leaders Liverpool went 2-0 up at half-time and had a third goal ruled out for a narrow offside call against Mohamed Salah. Cunha’s fine strike halved the deficit, though, and Vitor Pereira’s side forced their opponents to work hard for the three points.

The defeat leaves Wolves just two points outside the bottom three after Ipswich claimed a point at Aston Villa. Ipswich are level on points with Leicester, with both of Wolves’ relegation rivals due to face Pereira’s men in April.

Cunha has 12 league goals this season, scoring in back-to-back games, and recently signed a contract extension at Molineux. While his focus will be on dragging the team away from danger, his comments about Liverpool speak volumes about the hot favourites for the title.

“It’s like a mix of sensations. We feel good points today but if we start the game like we did in the second half then we leave with a better result,” the Brazilian said after Sunday’s defeat.

“We need to learn. I hope we get more points. Of course, I’m not completely happy because we didn’t get the points today but I will keep trying my best for the team and to help the guys.

“We need to believe if we can come here to play like we did against this unbelievable club, they are first in the league. The game is not only 45 minutes, it is 90 minutes and we need to keep this level for the rest of the season.”

Liverpool’s win was an important one, with title rivals Arsenal scoring two late goals to overcome Leicester on Saturday. Slot’s team are now 13 points clear of third-placed Nottingham Forest, who lost at Fulham, and the former Feyenoord boss suggested it’s now a two-horse race for the title.

“If you look at the last few seasons it has mostly been a battle between two teams. As things stand now it mostly looks like between us and Arsenal,” Slot told Match of the Day.

“I believe they have a 15-point game unbeaten run and I think at the start of that we were seven points clear of them and we still are now. So it tells you how well they are doing but also how well we are doing.”
