Adam Crafton of The Athletic has reported that Xabi Alonso is likely to be a leading contender for the Liverpool FC managerial role if the club decides to part ways with Arne Slot at the end of the season.

Alonso, a fan favorite from his playing days at Anfield, is believed to be open to a return to Merseyside despite his recent spell at Real Madrid. Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, Crafton indicated that the Spaniard would be a natural successor, saying he would likely accept the job and be firmly in contention if Slot were dismissed.
The speculation comes while Alonso’s reputation remains strong, even after a difficult five-month stint in Spain that ended in January. Before that, he enjoyed remarkable success with Bayer Leverkusen, guiding them to a historic unbeaten domestic double in 2024.
Reports also suggest there could already be a verbal agreement in place for Alonso to take charge on a three-year deal starting in June 2026, depending on how Liverpool’s season unfolds. Many supporters view him as the ideal successor to Jürgen Klopp, citing his outstanding tactical approach and strong connection to the club.
His potential arrival could also be boosted by ties to former Leverkusen stars like Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.
Although Slot earned goodwill by winning the league in his debut campaign, this season has been underwhelming. Liverpool currently sit sixth after nine league defeats, and a recent draw with Tottenham Hotspur has raised further concerns. Midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has even warned that European qualification could be at risk without improvement.
The team also faces a crucial UEFA Champions League clash against Galatasaray following a 1-0 first-leg defeat.
Crafton acknowledged that sacking Slot so soon after a title win would be a tough call, but insisted it remains a real possibility. Failure to secure Champions League football could ultimately push the club’s hierarchy into making a change, especially with Alonso currently available and waiting.
