Things could get even tougher for Arne Slot, as a strong replacement option is already available in Xabi Alonso, who has been out of management since ending his stint at Real Madrid C.F..

Alonso had previously been linked with the Liverpool F.C. job as a successor to Jürgen Klopp, but instead made the move to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium after leaving Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Now, reports from Spain claim Liverpool’s interest in the former FC Bayern Munich midfielder remains strong, viewing him as the ideal long-term successor to Slot.
However, Alonso is said to be cautious and would only consider the role if fully convinced by the sporting project at Anfield. According to El Nacional, he would also demand three key signings before taking charge.
Strengthening the defence is reportedly a top priority. With Ibrahima Konaté yet to agree a new deal and Virgil van Dijk nearing the latter stages of his career, Alonso is believed to have identified Alessandro Bastoni of Inter Milan as the ideal long-term replacement. Liverpool have already secured young talent Jérémy Jacquet from Stade Rennais F.C..
Midfield is another area of concern, with Alexis Mac Allister struggling to match last season’s form. While Ryan Gravenberch has recently signed a long-term deal, Alonso reportedly sees Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace F.C. as the perfect partner in midfield.
In attack, Alonso is said to be interested in Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain F.C.. With Mohamed Salah showing signs of decline this season and Cody Gakpo yet to fully impress following Luis Díaz’s move to FC Bayern Munich, Liverpool’s attack has largely struggled, aside from Hugo Ekitiké.
Reports suggest Alonso would be willing to take the job if these three signings are secured. However, after heavy spending last summer on players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, it remains uncertain whether Fenway Sports Group would back another major spending spree—especially if Liverpool fail to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
For now, it remains unclear whether FSG will stick with Slot or turn to a new manager, with Alonso emerging as a leading candidate
