Tottenham close in on Cody Gakpo as personal terms agreed – but Liverpool hold the key
Tottenham Hotspur are advancing a major move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with the Netherlands international having agreed personal terms on a contract through to 2031.
The 27-year-old only signed a new long-term deal at Anfield last year, but his situation has shifted following Arne Slot’s departure and Andoni Iraola’s appointment as head coach. Roberto De Zerbi views Gakpo as a priority target to strengthen Tottenham’s left-sided attacking options and give the side a proven Premier League goal threat.
According to transfer journalist Nicolò Schira, Gakpo is “one step away” from a switch to north London after settling personal terms. Spurs are now focused on striking a deal with Liverpool, with a fee in the region of £70 million under discussion.
Liverpool, however, are not prepared to rubber-stamp the departure just yet. Reports indicate the Reds want several attacking reinforcements secured first before sanctioning any exit. Selling Gakpo without adequate cover would leave Iraola short of established wide options.
From Tottenham’s perspective the move makes clear sense. Gakpo knows the Premier League, can operate from the left or through the middle, and at 27 is entering what should be his peak years. The substantial outlay carries less risk than many alternatives because he is already proven in England.
Liverpool retain the decisive say. Until their own incoming business progresses, the transfer remains contingent on the Reds’ willingness to sell.
