Liverpool made it a successful homecoming for Andoni Iraola as Alexander Isak’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 win at Bournemouth. The result was never in doubt once the breakthrough came, but the opening 45 minutes offered little in the way of excitement.
The first half was a tight, low-event affair. Both sides worked hard without creating clear openings, and the game rarely threatened to spark into life. Liverpool controlled spells of possession but struggled to break down a well-organised Cherries defence. Clear-cut chances were scarce on both ends.
One of the few genuine moments of danger arrived just after the half-hour mark. Bradley Barcola let fly from distance and forced a sharp reaction from Djordje Petrovic. The effort was deflected and saved with the goalkeeper’s leg — comfortably the closest call of a muted opening period. It was a reminder of the threat the Frenchman carries even when the overall tempo stays measured.
After the break Liverpool raised their level. Cody Gakpo’s strong work down the right created the opening for Isak to finish clinically in the 57th minute. From there the Reds managed the game effectively and claimed a valuable clean sheet on the road.
Speaking afterwards, Iraola was pleased with the result on his return to the Vitality Stadium while acknowledging the first-half limitations. He highlighted the team’s solidity, the contribution of players such as Jeremy Jacquet and Gakpo, and the importance of grinding out results in difficult away fixtures. The three points keep Liverpool’s unbeaten start intact and give the manager a positive note heading into the international break.
Barcola’s long-range attempt may not have found the net, but it stood out as one of the few moments of genuine quality in an otherwise cagey first half. For Iraola and Liverpool, the win was what mattered most.
