Alexander Isak continued his strong start to life at Liverpool by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 Premier League win at Bournemouth on Sunday.
Just after the hour mark, the Swedish striker finished from close range after good work down the right involving Cody Gakpo (with a slight deflection off Florian Wirtz) to put the Reds ahead at the Vitality Stadium.
Isak then ran towards the nearby section of travelling Liverpool supporters. He celebrated enthusiastically with the fans, embracing several of them as they returned the affection.
Once the celebrations ended, the referee showed him a yellow card.
Why the booking?
Under the Laws of the Game (Law 12 – Fouls and Misconduct), players are allowed to celebrate goals, but the celebration must not be excessive. Leaving the field of play to celebrate is not in itself a cautionable offence, provided the player returns promptly.
However, a player must be cautioned for:
- Climbing onto a perimeter fence and/or approaching the spectators in a manner which causes safety and/or security issues
- Acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way
- Removing the shirt or covering the head with it
- Covering the head or face with a mask or similar item
In this case, the referee judged that Isak’s decision to go into the crowd and embrace supporters crossed the line into the “safety and/or security issues” category. Officials are instructed to apply common sense but also to act preventatively when celebrations risk drawing large numbers of fans towards the barriers or creating disorder.
Isak accepted the card without protest. Given the importance of the goal on the road, it was a price he was clearly willing to pay.
The booking did not affect the result. Liverpool held on for a valuable 1-0 victory on Andoni Iraola’s return to his former club.
Bottom line: Celebrating with your own fans is common and often tolerated, but when a player enters the spectator area in a way that officials believe creates a security risk, a yellow card is the expected outcome under the current Laws of the Game.
