James Pearce has suggested that Giorgi Mamardashvili is unlikely to remain at Liverpool beyond this season if Alisson Becker extends his contract.
Speaking on The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, Pearce noted that talks over a new deal for Alisson have yet to begin. The Brazilian’s current contract expires in summer 2027. He has been Liverpool’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for eight years, with Mamardashvili signed as his understudy in 2025 and making 21 appearances so far.
Pearce was clear about the Georgian’s likely reaction if Alisson stays:
“If Alisson does stay, Mamardashvili isn’t going to tolerate being backup for a third successive season. If Alisson stays, that probably means that Mamardashvili goes.”
He also pointed to the club’s recent £30m signing of teenage goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Genk — the most expensive teenage goalkeeper in history — as further evidence that Liverpool are prioritising long-term succession planning. With Vítězslav Jaroš due to return in a few months and Armin Pécsi currently on loan in Austria, Pearce believes the club is comfortable with its depth for the next five to seven years. The immediate future at the position, however, remains uncertain.
Mamardashvili, 25, has not always been entirely convincing, but he produced a strong display in last week’s Carabao Cup win over Tottenham, making several outstanding saves. Like Caoimhín Kelleher before him, he finds himself stuck behind a world-class keeper who is extremely difficult to displace. At most other Premier League clubs he would be a regular starter.
Liverpool’s hierarchy will almost certainly prioritise keeping Alisson while he continues to perform at a high level under Andoni Iraola. What that means for Mamardashvili’s future is less clear. If the Brazilian signs on, the Georgian may well seek regular football elsewhere in 2027.
