Liverpool are growing increasingly confident of agreeing a new long-term contract with highly rated teenager Rio Ngumoha, with optimism shared by the club and the player.
The 18-year-old, who turned 18 at the end of August, is now eligible for an improved deal and significant pay rise that would reflect his rapid emergence as a first-team option at Anfield. He remains under contract until 2028, but the club is keen to tie him down for longer amid external interest.
Growing confidence around a new deal
Journalist Pete O’Rourke reported on the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider that both sides are positive about reaching an agreement.
“Obviously Liverpool are desperate to keep hold of Ngumoha; and the player himself, I understand, is happy at Liverpool as well and is set to get regular starts this season,” O’Rourke said.
“When you get top young players like this, they’re always going to attract interest from other clubs, but Liverpool are confident that his long-term future will be at Anfield… there is optimism on both sides that they can get this deal agreed.”
Earlier reports from Paul Joyce of The Times had already indicated the club’s desire to reward Ngumoha’s progress. Graeme Bailey has also claimed an agreement “in principle” is already in place for the young winger to extend his stay on Merseyside. Arsenal have been linked with interest in recent weeks, which may accelerate Liverpool’s efforts.
“Future world-beater” status
Anfield decision-makers view Ngumoha as a “future world-beater,” according to Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail. That high regard explains their determination to keep him despite competition for places.
Under Andoni Iraola, the attacking options on the flanks have expanded with the arrivals of Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz, alongside Cody Gakpo’s return to form. Even so, Ngumoha has started three of Liverpool’s seven matches this season and featured in two more. Iraola’s preference for rotating his wide players should continue to give the teenager opportunities, particularly during the busy post-international break period.
Path ahead
With two years still left on his current deal there is no immediate crisis, but securing Ngumoha’s long-term future would represent a significant success for Liverpool’s recruitment and retention strategy. Regular minutes and a clear pathway under Iraola appear to be key factors in the player’s contentment.
If the current positive momentum continues, both parties remain hopeful a new contract can be finalised in the coming months.
