Liverpool have reportedly made significant progress behind the scenes in their pursuit of Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, with fresh reports suggesting that the club have already completed important groundwork ahead of a possible transfer.

However, despite growing interest in the Senegal international, a January move to Anfield is far from guaranteed.

The Reds, currently under head coach Andoni Iraola, are looking to strengthen their squad after identifying central midfield as one of the key areas requiring improvement. Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League table, nine points behind leaders Arsenal following their recent defeat at Anfield.

With the January transfer window approaching, the club are assessing potential targets who could improve the quality and depth of Iraola’s midfield options.

Liverpool Make Progress in Lamine Camara Pursuit

According to respected Liverpool journalist David Lynch, the club have already carried out considerable preparatory work on Camara.

Speaking on the Anfield Index YouTube channel, Lynch suggested that Liverpool may have completed much of the background work required to pursue the Monaco midfielder.

However, he warned that this does not necessarily mean a January transfer will happen.

Monaco are reportedly demanding a fee of around €70 million (£58 million) for the 22-year-old, a significant increase on the €50 million valuation discussed during Chelsea’s attempt to sign him in the summer.

Lynch believes Liverpool could face difficulties completing the deal during the winter window, particularly because of the financial demands involved and the need to balance the existing squad.

Liverpool May Need to Sell Before Signing Another Midfielder

One of the biggest obstacles to a January move could be Liverpool’s current midfield situation.

Lynch suggested that bringing in a player of Camara’s profile, who would expect to feature regularly, could require the club to move on an existing midfielder first.

Alexis Mac Allister has been mentioned in transfer speculation, but Lynch does not believe Liverpool would be particularly interested in allowing the Argentine to leave halfway through the season.

Losing an important player during the campaign would create another problem for Iraola, especially with Liverpool still trying to improve their consistency.

Chelsea Interest and Alex Scott Alternative

Camara previously attracted strong interest from Chelsea, with the London club reportedly coming close to securing his signature during the summer transfer window before negotiations collapsed.

Chelsea have since been linked with Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, who is reportedly valued at around £100 million.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are believed to have maintained their interest in Camara as they continue assessing their long-term midfield plans.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has also highlighted Liverpool’s continued monitoring of the Senegal international, with the club understood to be considering significant midfield reinforcements for 2027.

Will Lamine Camara Join Liverpool in January?

Camara remains an attractive option for Liverpool because of his midfield qualities and potential to become an important first-team player.

The groundwork may already have been completed, but the transfer will depend on several factors, including Monaco’s asking price, Liverpool’s financial plans and whether the club decide to make room for another midfielder.

For now, Liverpool supporters will have to wait for further developments.

A January transfer cannot be ruled out completely, but the latest assessment suggests that a summer move or a longer-term deal could be more realistic.
