Mikel Arteta has expressed his pride after Arsenal secured a memorable 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, ending their 14-year wait for a Premier League win at the famous stadium.
Kai Havertz was the match-winner, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute after receiving an excellent assist from Declan Rice. The crucial goal proved enough to secure all three points for the Gunners and strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League table.
Following the final whistle, Arteta praised his players for delivering a result that Arsenal had been chasing for many years. The Spanish manager admitted that winning at Anfield had been one of the major challenges his team wanted to overcome.
He described the achievement as an important moment for the club, expressing his satisfaction with the determination and commitment shown by his players throughout the encounter.
However, Arsenal’s victory was overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision that left Liverpool frustrated.
The biggest talking point came in the first half when Alexander Isak appeared to have his shirt pulled by Jurrien Timber inside the penalty area. Despite Liverpool’s protests, referee Andy Madley did not award a penalty.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and captain Virgil van Dijk were both unhappy with the decision. Iraola even suggested that his players might have to adapt their approach in similar situations in future matches.
There was also tension towards the closing stages of the game, with Noni Madueke and Alexis Mac Allister involved in a heated exchange following a clash between the two players.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Carragher also criticised Mac Allister’s reaction, describing his behaviour as embarrassing.
Despite the controversy and Liverpool’s frustration, Arsenal managed to protect their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The result represents a significant milestone for Arteta’s side, who have finally secured a Premier League victory at Anfield after 14 years. It also gives Arsenal an important boost in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
For Liverpool, however, the defeat leaves plenty of questions to answer, particularly regarding the controversial penalty incident and their performance against one of their main title rivals.
