Isak left little room for interpretation. Speaking to BBC Sport, the Sweden international said Andoni Iraola’s high-intensity, vertical style will help him and the team — a pointed contrast with the system he inherited from Arne Slot.
The numbers already hint at the difference. Isak has matched last season’s Premier League goal tally (three) in far fewer minutes. A fit Isak is a different proposition from the one who arrived last summer after a disrupted pre-season and then suffered further injury.
Slot wasn’t the villain — but the fit was imperfect
It would be unfair to say Slot’s football “harmed” Isak. Slot valued quick wide players who could attack centrally; recruitment simply didn’t give him enough of them. Injuries and fitness gaps mattered more than ideology.
Still, the early evidence under Iraola is clearer: the system is built to get the ball forward fast and to treat the No.9 as a finisher, not a hold-up artist waiting for the attack to arrive.
Isak described it directly:
“He asks me to be part of the defending but to defend in positions where, when we win the ball, we can counter quickly and get the ball forward to the offensive line.
“He said ‘score goals’, but he wants me to defend. The way we defend – we defend to score goals so defending, in the end, is an attacking weapon.”
And on the wider idea:
“He came with his football – the way he wants to play and the high intensity which I think will benefit me, the club and the way the club wants to play football […]
“I think that’s what the team needs. It’s not just about getting the ball to me, it’s about getting the ball forward and to all of the offensive players quickly.
“I think that will benefit the team. I think if we can do that then we should score more goals.”
That is the Liverpool supporters’ brief in one paragraph: press high, win it high, go forward immediately, score more.
What the 2026/27 numbers actually show

The speed and finishing profile are still elite. Box involvement (4.58 touches per 90) is only mid-table among forwards. If Liverpool want the record signing to look like a record signing every week, the team has to get him the ball in the area more often — not just ask him to defend better.
The point, without the what-ifs
Slot’s era had structural limits and bad luck with fitness. Iraola’s early work is simpler to judge: it looks more like the Liverpool supporters expect — front-foot defending used as an attacking tool, verticality, and a central striker the system is designed to feed.
Isak has said the quiet part out loud. The rest is whether the team can actually deliver the ball to him, and to the rest of the front line, quickly enough to make the quote true.
