Andoni Iraola has called for a clear tactical adjustment after recent matches exposed a recurring problem: Liverpool are winning the ball too deep and paying for it in attack.
Speaking at Monday’s press conference, the manager said recovering possession low in their own half forces the side to break down organised blocks of 11 players. The solution, he argued, is simple in principle and demanding in execution.
“We are recovering the ball very low and when that happens you have to attack against 11 players,” Iraola said. “We need to recover the ball as high as possible because it makes the offensive side that much easier.”
Iraola stressed that effective midfield control is not the responsibility of two or three players alone. It requires coordinated defensive work from the front line all the way back, creating the conditions for sharper transitions and better rhythm once possession is won.
The comments come after performances in which Liverpool have looked less aggressive in the higher zones of the pitch than Iraola wants. He believes restoring that intensity will free the attackers and reduce the amount of low-percentage build-up required against packed defences.
