Liverpool manager Arne Slot has defended his controversial decision to substitute teenage winger Rio Ngumoha during Liverpool’s 1-1 Premier League draw against Chelsea F.C. at Anfield.
Ngumoha, who was one of Liverpool’s brightest performers in the match, was taken off midway through the second half and replaced by Alexander Isak. The decision immediately triggered loud boos from sections of the Anfield crowd, with many supporters frustrated to see the 17-year-old removed while Liverpool were searching for a winning goal.
Speaking after the game, Slot insisted the substitution was necessary because the youngster was struggling physically.
The Liverpool boss explained that Ngumoha had been experiencing muscle problems and was unsure if he could continue playing. Slot admitted he expected the angry reaction from supporters because of how well the teenager had performed.
