ARTETA REACTS AS ARSENAL END 14-YEAR ANFIELD WAIT WITH HISTORIC WIN OVER LIVERPOOL
Mikel Arteta has expressed his delight after Arsenal secured a memorable 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, ending their 14-year wait for a Premier League win at the famous stadium.
Kai Havertz emerged as Arsenal’s match-winner, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute following an excellent assist from Declan Rice. The crucial goal proved enough to earn the Gunners all three points and strengthen their position at the top of the Premier League table, where they now hold a three-point advantage.
Speaking after the match, Arteta admitted that finally winning at Anfield was a significant achievement for his team. The Arsenal boss praised his players for their determination, discipline and commitment, describing the result as an important milestone for the club.
However, the victory was not without controversy. Liverpool were left frustrated after referee Andy Madley failed to award them a first-half penalty when Alexander Isak appeared to have his shirt pulled by Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber inside the penalty area.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and captain Virgil van Dijk were both unhappy with the decision. Iraola even suggested that his players might need to go down in similar situations in future if such incidents continue to go unpunished.
There was also tension during the closing stages of the match, as Noni Madueke and Alexis Mac Allister became involved in a heated confrontation.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher subsequently criticised Mac Allister’s reaction, describing his behaviour as embarrassing and suggesting that the midfielder needed to control his emotions.
Despite Liverpool’s complaints over the refereeing decisions and the late tension between the players, Arsenal managed to protect their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The result represents a major achievement for Arteta’s side, who have finally overcome one of their longest-standing Premier League challenges at Anfield while collecting three valuable points in the title race.
For Liverpool, however, the defeat will leave plenty of questions, particularly surrounding the controversial penalty decision and their inability to take something from the match.
