Federico Chiesa’s place at Liverpool is under fresh scrutiny after Italian reporting suggested the winger could be offered a way back to Serie A in January.
Speaking on Radio Punto Zero, journalist Emanuele Cammaroto said he was receiving “signs” that Chiesa wants regular football and that Liverpool may sound out Italian clubs — including Napoli — in the winter window.
The 28-year-old has never settled into a consistent role since joining from Juventus in 2024. Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his rhythm. The latest warning sign was his omission, along with Wataru Endo, from Andoni Iraola’s Champions League league-phase squad, a decision confirmed by Sky Sport Italia.
Competition for wide positions has also tightened. Bradley Barcola and Victor Muñoz arrived in the summer; Cody Gakpo stayed after a proposed move to Manchester City collapsed. Iraola now has younger options ahead of Chiesa in the pecking order.
A January exit would not be a surprise. Chiesa still has the quality to affect games, but he needs minutes. Liverpool cannot guarantee them. Napoli would get a proven Serie A attacker without paying a premium for a younger name; Liverpool would trim the wage bill and free a squad place.
Chiesa’s father has said his son is happy at Anfield. Happiness and a starting role are not the same thing. Unless Iraola finds a clear use for him, a return to Italy remains the most logical outcome for all sides.
