Tottenham remain interested in Cody Gakpo as Liverpool weigh squad needs
Fabrizio Romano has indicated that Tottenham Hotspur still hold an interest in Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo this summer. Speaking on the Here We Go podcast, the transfer expert noted that Spurs are expected to make two further signings before the window closes, with wingers high on their priority list.
“In a separate story, because I expect Tottenham to sign two players, I would still keep an eye on Tottenham and Cody Gakpo because he’s a player they still like,” Romano said. “Let’s see what’s going to happen there [and] if Liverpool will open doors or not. But for sure, there will be many movements about wingers for Tottenham.”
Liverpool are understood to be reluctant to sell the Netherlands international. An exit is not completely ruled out, however, particularly if the club’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola requires significant funds and forces them to generate money from an existing asset.
Liverpool’s wide options and the case for keeping Gakpo
From Liverpool’s perspective, sanctioning Gakpo’s departure looks difficult. The club has made clear it wants four high-quality wide options available for the new season: Victor Muñoz, Rio Ngumoha, Cody Gakpo and a new signing. Federico Chiesa would technically provide a fifth option if he remains at the club, though he is not viewed as a consistent first-choice solution.
Losing the 27-year-old would leave a noticeable gap. Even if a Barcola deal is completed, Liverpool would still need Gakpo (or an equivalent) to maintain the depth they are targeting. Adding another recruitment task to an already busy list is also unappealing.
Gakpo’s form has strengthened his position. Across 56 appearances in all competitions this season (including World Cup matches), he has contributed 19 goals and assists, averaging a goal involvement every 209 minutes (Transfermarkt). A strong showing at the World Cup will only have increased his market value and the reluctance of Liverpool to let him leave.
Outlook
While Tottenham’s interest is genuine and the situation remains live, the more probable outcome is that Liverpool retain Gakpo. The Reds appear set on protecting their wide depth rather than creating a problem they then have to solve. Any movement would likely require a substantial offer and a clear plan to replace him—conditions that currently look hard to meet.
