Former Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has died at the age of 87.
Gillett became Liverpool’s co-owner in 2007 after purchasing a 50% stake in the club alongside fellow American businessman Tom Hicks. The pair subsequently took full control of the Reds.
Their three-year ownership became highly controversial among Liverpool supporters, with growing concerns surrounding the club’s finances and fears that Liverpool could be pushed towards administration.
Gillett and Hicks eventually sold the club to Fenway Sports Group in 2010, bringing their turbulent spell at Anfield to an end.
Away from Liverpool, Gillett was also the owner of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens between 2001 and 2009.
His death was confirmed by Canadiens owner, president and CEO Geoff Molson, who paid tribute to Gillett and offered his condolences to his family.
Gillett’s time at Liverpool remains one of the most controversial periods in the club’s modern history.
