Liverpool fans were left surprised when Ronald Araujo was taken off at half-time during the Reds’ dramatic 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday night. However, Andoni Iraola has now explained the real reason behind the decision, and there is some encouraging news for Liverpool supporters!
Despite scoring Liverpool’s equaliser just before half-time, Araujo did not return for the second half. Instead, Iraola introduced Florian Wirtz and made a tactical adjustment that saw Ryan Gravenberch move into the right-back position.
Naturally, the substitution raised questions about whether the Uruguayan defender had suffered another injury. But Iraola was quick to calm those fears, making it clear that the change was a tactical decision rather than a response to a physical problem. 🙌
Speaking after the game, the Liverpool boss explained that Villarreal had caused his team problems by overloading the midfield, making it difficult for Araujo to cope with his defensive responsibilities.
According to Iraola, Villarreal were using three holding midfielders, with Alberto Moleiro moving inside to create additional pressure in central areas. This left Araujo uncomfortable when tracking the movement of opposition players.
“Ronald was feeling uncomfortable following all the way,” Iraola explained.
The Liverpool manager then revealed why he believed Gravenberch was better suited to the role, praising the Dutch midfielder’s ability to defend centrally while also handling one-on-one situations out wide.
Iraola also believed the change would give Liverpool greater attacking support down the right flank, particularly for young sensation Rio Ngumoha, who was causing problems with his forward runs. 🔥
And the decision proved to be a masterstroke!
Gravenberch looked more comfortable after moving into his new position, while Wirtz made a significant impact after coming off the bench. The German playmaker eventually scored what proved to be the winning goal in Liverpool’s thrilling 4-3 victory.
For Araujo, the most important news is that his substitution was not prompted by an injury. Although he had experienced difficulties against Villarreal before scoring, Iraola’s explanation suggests that the decision was made to improve Liverpool’s tactical balance.

Taking off a player who had just scored an important goal was a bold decision, but the Liverpool boss trusted his tactical judgement, adjusted his formation and watched his team secure a massive Champions League victory.
Liverpool may have conceded three goals, but the comeback, the tactical changes and Wirtz’s decisive contribution gave the Anfield crowd plenty to celebrate.
Now the big question is whether Iraola will continue using Gravenberch at right-back when Liverpool need more defensive stability and attacking balance.
WHAT DO YOU THINK, LIVERPOOL FANS? 🤔
Was Andoni Iraola right to substitute Ronald Araujo at half-time, or should he have given the defender more time to settle into the game?
